The History of Thai Yoga Massage
Over 2,500 years ago Thai Yoga massage was founded by Jivaka Kumar bhaccha, a renowned doctor and Yogi, born in India at the time of the Buddha. Bhaccha became famous for his skills in medicine and also for treating such people as the Buddha himself. This art is heavily rooted in the Indian healing tradition of Ayurvedic medicine, but is still heavily practised in Thailand today.
Thai massage was brought to western society in 1970s by a German named Harald Brust (1955 - 2005), who spent many years researching Yoga, Buddhist meditation and traditional Thai massage. His book ‘The Art of Traditional Thai Massage, was the first book on the subject.
Thai massage is the perfect way to get all the benefits of Yoga and more without having to take part in a class setting, you don't have to do the work yourself, as you simply just relax. It can be referred to ‘Yoga for lazy people’.
Thai Yoga massage is performed on a mat or on the floor, both client and practitioner are fully dressed in comfortable clothing, for ease of movement and flexibility. No oils or lotions will be used.
What are the benefits of Thai Yoga Massage
The benefits of Thai Yoga massage are very similar to that of Yoga Asana. The massage can relieve general muscle tightness and reverse the loss of flexibility, that happens to many of us in the western society. This can the the result of overworking them with sport or exercise or even not using them enough as many of us spend long hours at a desk or driving.
The theory of Thai Massage is that muscles that are tight lead to the diminished flow of energy around the body. This leads to inflexibility and stiffness. The massage can bring relief from aches and pains, increase flexibility and improve range of movement and overall can have a huge benefit on preventing injury.
The technique used in Thai massage (Handing & Thumb Pressing) are designed to increase the energy lines and facilitate better blood flow of oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. It also aids in helping your body get rid of waste such as metabolic byproducts and carbon dioxide, more efficiently.
A more traditional therapeutic massage is often prescribed as a way to reduce stress and aid in relaxation. Thai massage affords these same benefits.
